Storing water on Night 0
The first real task is water. The objectives read: pick up the bucket under the sink, place the bucket inside the bathtub, and turn on the water and fill the bucket. In the footage the bucket is a blue cleaning bucket sitting in the cabinet under the kitchen sink.
In the bathtub you get separate prompts for the cold tap, the hot tap and the plug, and the item panel shows the bucket's water level. When it says Full, turn the tap off, pick the bucket up and carry it to the water rack in the living room.
The in-game book's first rule is to store water before the taps stop. In the 4-player run from STVELAW the group was already hunting for more bottles and buckets a few days in, and filled extra pots and buckets the same way.
Gathering food into the pantry
Next the objective becomes Gather the apartment's food, with a pantry counter underneath. Open the fridge, every cupboard and the shopping bag and carry each item to the pantry shelves. Each tin or packet shows how many portions it is worth; the tinned fish in the footage is two.
The counter differs between apartments: 19 portions in the MBT run, and 32 of 49 and later 38 of 49 in the CHALLS footage. So the total isn't fixed; read your own counter.
Tinned food needs a can opener before you can eat it. Keep the tins and the opener together. The Spoon game pass is the other way to eat canned food.
Rationing from Day 1
Day 1 starts at about 08:55 with the objective Plan today's rations. Open the guide and go to Rations to see how long your food and water will last, then drink from the Sealed 2 L Bottle by holding F. The game shows how much you drank, 0.5 L per sip in the video.
The book's rules say the same thing in different words: count tomorrow's food before eating extra today. Hunger and thirst go down over time, so the tutorial is teaching you to budget, not to eat everything at once.
Neighbors can help. In STVELAW's co-op run the group gave a neighbor food and got a radio in return. We haven't seen how far trading goes later in the game.
Rationing tips
- Do the water first. It's the first task, and the first rule in the book.
- Check your pantry counter after the Night 0 gather; it tells you what you have to stretch over the days.
- Keep a can opener with your tins, or the food is useless.
- Hold F to drink; a sip is 0.5 L, so a 2 L bottle is not a lot.
- Don't open the door to trade without the peephole check first.

Under the kitchen sink, in the cabinet. It's a blue Cleaning Bucket.
Where do you put the water?
On the metal water rack in the living room, after filling the bucket in the bathtub.
How much food do you start with?
It depends on the apartment. The footage shows 19 portions in one and 49 in another, so check the pantry counter.
