The Deer at a glance
| Role | Main (original) antagonist, one of five night monsters with the Ram, Owl, Bat and Cat |

| Damage | 25 or more per the Fandom wiki; more when it is hungry and later in the run |
| Speed | Slower than a sprinting player at first, then faster the longer it chases you (both wikis) |
| When | Nights only. Harmless on Day 1 |
| Stopped by | Flashlight stun (shorter each time), the campfire safe zone, and sunrise |
What the Deer does at night
Once night falls the Deer can spawn on a player and runs straight at the nearest one. Both wikis agree it ignores weapons: shooting or hitting it does nothing, so the only counters are light and distance.
A flashlight stuns it, but it recovers faster every time and speeds up the longer the chase lasts. If you reach the campfire while it is chasing you, it is stunned and runs off. At sunrise it leaves.
In biomes with their own monster it can be swapped out: the Fandom wiki says the Owl replaces it in the Snow Biome, the Ram in the Volcanic Biome and the Cat in the Jungle Biome after night 5.
Hungry Deer
Some nights the game warns “The Deer is hungry tonight”, then again as night approaches. A hungry Deer has glowing red eyes, is faster and hits harder.
The Deer also turns hungry whenever the campfire goes out. The Fandom wiki says it then spawns right next to the campfire, so run for shelter at once.
Deer and Cultist raids
During a Cultist raid the Deer stands near the campfire and watches instead of hunting you; it runs away if you walk up to it or all the Cultists are dead. If you are far from camp, it can still hunt you.
See the Cultist page for how raids work.
Event looks and updates
The Fandom wiki lists these temporary changes. None of them are in the game now unless the developer brings the event back.
- Halloween 2025: vampire costume with a red collar, small bat wings and fangs.
- “The Deer is HURT” update (from Nov 15, 2025): the Deer was injured by the Bat. Players could bandage and feed it, and it then helped fight two Cultist raids. The wiki says the event ended in Dec 2025.
- Christmas 2025: lights on its antlers and a red nose.
- Thanksgiving: the wiki says cooking all 10 dishes showed the Deer eating the BBQ ribs, after which it defended players from raids.
- Easter 2026: bunny ears.
How to survive the Deer
- Use Day 1 to scavenge. The Deer is completely harmless that day.
- Be at the campfire before dark, and keep it fueled. A dead campfire at night means a hungry Deer next to you.
- On a “hungry tonight” warning, stay near camp. If you are deep in the forest, a Teleporter gets you back.
- Use big trees and buildings to block it: the wikis say its pathfinding is poor, so you can gain distance in a chase.
- Get off the ground. Players report these spots work: halfway up a ladder (Water Tower, Treehouse, Tool Workshop), the empty crate in a Barn, a roof corner of a Watchtower, or a corner of a Cabin under the roof.
- Classes with a speed boost can outrun a non-hungry Deer (per the Fandom wiki).
FAQ
Can you kill the Deer in 99 Nights in the Forest?
No. Both community wikis say it cannot be damaged by any weapon. Use a flashlight to stun it, then get to the campfire.
Is the Deer dangerous on Day 1?
No. On Day 1 it won't hunt anyone who leaves the campfire, so it is the safest time to scavenge.
What does “The Deer is hungry tonight” mean?
That night's Deer is faster, hits harder and has red eyes. Stay close to the campfire before night starts.
Why did the Deer spawn next to my campfire?
The Fandom wiki says the Deer turns hungry and spawns by the campfire if the fire goes out at night. Keep it fueled.
Is the Deer the mother of the missing children?
That is a fan theory on the community wiki, not something the game confirms. The wiki does say the Deer kidnapped the four missing children and is worshipped by the Cultists.
